How well does your name Google? Who are you up against? (Celebrities, etc.)
Submitted by Matt Blank.
I haven't done one of these for a while, but this one is vaguely amusing. My real name is virtually impossible to google. I'm not up against a celebrity or a famous town or anything, I'm up against a freaking month! (Andrew January).
If you could write a book about anything, what would it be about?
I had an idea for a book/film about a guy who's ability to tell the boundries of reality and halucinations slowly blurs until he can't tell what is real and what are the violent delusions of his mind. He ends hurting people and himself, but now the slim buffer of "this isn't real so it's ok" is gone.
A lot of it would be focused on the popular culture - music, film, books, games etc. and the effect they have, whether for good or for bad, making a social comment on the difficulty of telling cause and effect in these situations.
I had the rough outline penned out for quite a while, but I'm terrible at details so never actualy progressed further. I still like the idea, but I don't think it would ever come into fruition.
What is your favorite way to relieve stress?
I tend not to discover my stress until I'm releiving it, and that tends to be through music. I either listen to something like metal (Disturbed, Rammstein) to shout my stress out, or something like punk (Sex Pistols) which seems to make me feel quite bubbly and sociable.
What song or lyrics are stuck in your head at the moment? What album is it from?
Submitted by Lox Ly.
I currently have "She's a primadona, primadona. She's a diva from back in the day", which is from Ookla the Mok's [otmfan.com] P.M. Prima Donna [otmfan.com]. I tend to get alot of Ookla the Mok stuck in my head of late, their tunes are just too damned catchy. For a while I had the lyrics from Mr. Worf [otmfan.com], "I’ve got two dead wives and a son named Alexander" [otmfan.com], except I keep getting it the wrong way round, getting instead "I’ve got two dead sons and a wife named Alexander". I don't watch Star Trek enough to know the Klingon's opinions on homosexuality, but I don't think I would have an gonads left if I made that mistake to his face.
(I realise that he doesn't actualy exist. Also, to pre-empt, the female version is Alexandra, not Alexander)
What was the last wedding you went to? Were you in the wedding?
The last wedding I went to was two of years ago, the couple in question being my brother and now sister in law. I greatly enjoyed the wedding, though the socialising did drain it out of me a part.
I was an usher, and had to guide people to the optimum seating arangement, though my family didn't seem able to grasp the fact that the seats marked "Reserved" were, in fact, reserved for them and were quite content with sitting two or three rows back for their grandsons/nephews wedding.
My sister in laws grandmother was a very lovely lady who aparently still comments on me everytime the subject is bought up. There had been some problems between her and her husband for many years, and they had to be escorted and made sure not to meet for the entire wedding.
This time next week my sister will be married, from which it is safe to conclude her wedding is the next I shall be attending. I am again an usher, and am looking forward to assuring people they may indeed sit where I have told them they should sit.
I'm currently trying to wear in my new shoes (well, about two years old but only twice worn) and have a nice red tie, matching not only with my brother but also the bridesmaids. I should be looking uber smart.
It strange, though perhaps unsuprising, that it feels different this time. My sister has been away for the duration of her University education, wheras my brother was at home for a large portion of his. Everytime I see her she has changed a little, matured a little, and now she is off and getting married. Talking to my dad last night, it is obviously different for him. He is giving away his daughter. Through the teenage years the sons tend to become more distant, but come back as they grow older, bonding over a few pints in the pub. Conversly, the relationship with the daughter grows stronger, but then they are lost when they get married.
It should be a good occasion, most likely not without it's hickups, but a good day and another good memory as another of my siblings gets married and starts up a family of their own. A good day, a day of celibration, but also a day of loss.
What was the first movie you remember seeing in a movie theater?
Question submitted by mainmor.
I don't remember what the first film I went to see was, but the earliest I remember is Star Wars: Episode 1. I went up to the now closed down cinema in Sidcup ("The cinema was closed in 2000 and finally demolished in 2003, having been deemed commercially unviable by new owners Odeon." - Wikipedia) with my then friend James Knapp (we have lost touch now unfortunately).
We made the big mistake of buying our drink from the cinema instead of the McDonalds over the road, so it cost us alot more than it ought to. We then proceeded to saturate it with sherbert to create a flat sherbert flavoured coke, mmmmm delicious ¬_¬.
When buying our tickets, we were asked if we wanted to see Star Wars, or Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me. Being only 11 at the time we thought it fantastically naughty to see a film rated 15, but decided to stick with Star Wars.
Once inside the cinema was pretty much empty (it being near the end of the films run) so we chose carefully the exact middle seat and sat in it. I don't really remember much about the film itself though, but I do know I have enjoyed it since.
Since then I have been to a fair few showings at empty cinemas. Perhaps my favourite was Without a Paddle which, whilst not only being a fantastic film, was shown in an empty cinema. Empty, that is, except for about 10 minutes when an elderly couple walked in near the end, sat down for a while, presumably realised it was the wrong film and prompty left.
I also vividly remember some more fun had in an empty cinema when me and my friend James Barry went to see (for some unknown reason) Cat In The Cat. The film was okay, but we had great fun at the end; after waiting until the end only to realise that there was no bonus footage and everyone else had left we ran up and down the isles jumping and generaly having a good blokish laugh.
Do you have any tattoos? If not, if you were going to get inked, what would you get?
I've never really considered a tattoo for myself personally. They look good on some people, as long as they don't grow to be older than about 30 and wrinkles don't set in. Honestly, I think old people with tattoo's look slightly wrong.
I can't really envisage myself with a tattoo, I don't really think I have either the personality nor the body and style to pull it off. I'm not sure what I would have if I did get one, possibly the symbol below:
But I digress; again, it's rather difficult for me to think what I would get when I don't really plan on getting anything done. Several of my friends either have tatto's, or are planning on getting them. Most of them that have them look good, but those that are planning on it I really can't see having one, so maybe it's one of those "You can imagine it until you see it" things. Either way, I'm not going to permenently mark my body just to find out.
What are your favorite and least favorite words? Any reasons why?
Question submitted by Byrne.
Hmm, this is a hard one to answer. As with any of my tastes, it changes alot I guess.
I don't know what it is, but whenever anyone is aked this question their mind always leaps straight to curse words. Maybe it's something ingrained in us, maybe it's cultural. It's slightly worrying, though probably not a huge thing.
So, when discussing it with my friend I came across some ones I like, including bollocks, that great staple of British cursing. My relationship with the word c*nt is an interesting and changing one, but also something I would rather not go into atm.
As mentioned in a previous blog I have a fascination with the word(s) Churchill (or church hill). I don't really know why, it's just...fascinating.
I also really like the phrase "cellar door", as popularised by Donnie Darko. It is a wonderfully lovely phrase when mused purely for the sound and considered without meaning or context. But as soon as you begin to consider what it actualy means it slams you right back down to earth with a "wth, that's stupid". It's often interesting to see what peoples reactions to it are. Those who are more imaginative can see the beauty in it, and those who are more practical tend to be confused by it.
There aren't really many words that I don't like. And I guess there's not really any specific words (other than those mentioned) that I really like. There are some, like the aforementioned bollocks, that I do revel in saying because of the fantastic prenounciation, but really alot of the time I am more fascinated, as with cellar door, how language is used.
If you had a band, what would you call yourselves?
Question submitted by Zoot.
I know I've already posted on this, but I remembered an mIRC script a friend of mine had that generated random band names, and went googling [google.co.uk/search?q=band%20name%20generator] for a script.
The first one (and tbh only one I bothered looking at) was called Band Name Maker [bandnamemaker.com].
Some gems that it came up with:
Hormonal Pickle
Hunky Belly of the Ballistic Deer
Koala of the Professional Daughter
I was also reminded that on Ross Noble (a god) and Terri Psiakis' brief radio broadcast on Triple J, Ross came up with a feature that involved him mixing made up band names with genuine ones and getting people to guess which was which in the "Band, Not a Band" quiz. There were some interesting ones that came up, but I can't remember alot of them. However, I would highly recommend you listen to the podcasts [abc.net.au/triplej/rossandterri/]. I may even give them a relisten and post some of the more interesting ones.
p.s. Did you know George Foreman has no fingerprints?
If you had a band, what would you call yourselves?
Question submitted by Zoot.
I was walking around a local shopping center (The Glades, Bromley [theglades.uk.com]) a couple of years ago. I don't remember why or how, but I think I was thinking about the same question and decided upon Churchill. Or maybe I was thinking about Churchill and decided it would be a good name for a band. Either way, it would be Churchill.
Ever since, I've developed a fasination. There is a road near my college that's called something like "Church Hill", and if it wasn't such a crap place I would seriously consider moving there. My computer is called Churchill in XP and Clementine in Vista (Churchill's wife). I even based an unfinished poem around the idea of a church on top of a hill being the center of a bizaar League of Gentlement style town.
It's not so much the man himself, but more the name. The idea of the combination of Church and Hill for some unknown reason fascinates me (which is why I love Church Hill road). Come to think of it, the band would be called "Church Hill".
