Have you tried Lyx? I prefer it's strategy for writing "real" documents. WYSIWYM, with the last "M" being "mean". Quite a bit better than the constant tweaking of a Word-based document.

I guess Tex and "correct typefacing" scares me. Maybe it's because I'm used to the sorts of documents Word produces, or maybe I was using a dodgy Tex engine, but I would always find odd kerning choices which made what appeared to be abnormally large gaps between letters and alternate lines would appear bolder. I can see the justifications behind the article you linked, but the above just made the document really difficult to read as the glaring gaps and differences were distracting.
